    ইসকনের বদমাইশি ঃ ইসকনের হেড অফিস মায়াপুরে। তাদের ক্রমবর্ধমান জমির খাঁই মেটাতে গিয়ে সেখানকার স্থানীয় মুসলমানরা বাস্তুচ্যুত হতে বাধ্য হচ্ছেন এবং আশেপাশের 'হিন্দু' পল্লীতে ঠাঁই না পেয়ে গঙ্গার উল্টোদিকে তিওরখালি নামক মুসলমান অধ্যুষিত এলাকায় মাথা গুঁজতে বাধ্য হচ্ছেন। একটি নির্দিষ্ট রাজনৈতিক দলের বদান্যতা না পেলে ওখানে নতুন কোনও মানুষের কাজ পাওয়া প্রায় অসম্ভব। সেই ইসকন জাতিভেদ বজায় রাখবে না তো কে রাখবে?

    ইসকন মায়াপুরে শুধু মুসলমানদের বাস্তুচ্যুত করছে না, হিন্দুদেরও করছে। প্রথমে চড়া দামের লোভ, তারপর জমিতে শেয়াল-ছাগল ছেড়ে দেওয়া এবং শেষে হুমকি। প্রমোটাররাও লজ্জা পাবেন এইসব 'ধার্মিক'দের আচরণ দেখে। স্থানীয় লোকজন তো বটেই এমনকী নবদ্বীপের লোকজনও চরম বিরক্ত ও ক্ষুব্ধ এঁদের কারবারে। উপরি হিসেবে আছে চৈতন্য জন্মস্থান হিসেবে মায়াপুরকে চালিয়ে দেওয়ার প্রচার ও প্রতিষ্ঠার অপপ্রয়াস। সমস্ত উঁচু পদে শ্বেতাঙ্গ 'প্রভু'দের রমরমা, কর্মচারী প্রায় সবাই যদিও ভারতীয়। উপনিবেশ দেখতে হলে এখানে আসবেন নতুবা 'শান্তি' খুঁজতে অন্য কোথাও যোগাযোগ করতে পারেন।

    During early 70s there was a big fight broke out in Mayapur..local villagers started protesting against using their village women working in side the Ashram.. many of those women were married in the temple (Gandharbo Vivaho)some of those ladies were having children also by the Ashomers.. then those foreigners would leave and return to their home land leaving women and children behind.. during that protest (it started off with a brother getting angry for his sister getting pregnant)all Mayapuris came out with hand guns and ruffles.. with serious weapons.. it was then turned into a big affair..Naxals were saying they were breeding children...then, Senator Moynihan (NY State, passed away) was Ambassador to India had to come from Delhi out to Mayapur with Marine guys to find out what was happening.. local people were saying why keep guns inside the Ashram if they were to be Vishnaba.. Naxals and leftists were saying many CIA agents were amongst them.. hidding.. time was bad..it was 60s and 70s..it was also said ,Congress took help of America to counter attact and wipe out the Naxalbari movement.. i for sure say that they were breeding children for their cult...like Hitler like Rev Jones of Johanasburg town.. in the case of David Kureshi from Texas.. Clinton govt had to go in with ATF to counter them.. had to burn the entire area down.. that was a ultra Christian cult..home grown white terrorist.. anti fed. govt..
    I have read much on Mayapur and other Indian cults... as well as other countries..

    ISKCON commune in West Virginia gets mired in murder, child molestation, kidnapping storm

    The Krishna Consciousness cult's New Vrindavan commune in West Virginia is at the centre of a raging controversy, following charges of murder, child molestation, kidnapping, copyright violations and tax evasion.

    Sixty miles west of the steel city of Pittsburgh, the six-lane highway yields to a narrow winding hill road. At several sharp bends, bright, big signboards indicate the distance to the destination, Prabhupada's Palace of Gold. The $7 million (Rs 9 crore) palace in a 4,000-acre commune called New Vrindavan straddles the Appalachian Hills in West Virginia, and now ranks as the second-biggest tourist attraction in the state. But recently the commune, its 700 "Krishna conscious" residents and their chief, Swami Bhaktipada, have been in the news because of serious criminal allegations against them. To find out the facts Special Correspondent Shekhar Gupta visited New Vrindavan, and talked to scores of devotees, federal officials, and local politicians. His report:
    The commune's brochures call it the Taj Mahal of America. The leaders of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) call it a magnificent tribute to the glory of Krishna. But for the average American, the New Vrindavan commune, the showpiece of the entire ISKCON movement, is fast becoming familiar for entirely non-spiritual reasons.

    The commune and its spiritual and temporal leader, His Divine Grace Swami Kirtanananda Bhaktipada, face charges ranging from murder to panhandling (begging), child molestation to copyright violations, and from kidnapping to tax evasion. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have already raided the commune and taken away a truckload of documents, files and even computers. The FBI and the Marshall County police have been investigating charges of murder and drug smuggling while a Federal Grand Jury has been looking into the entire gamut of charges for the past six months. To take the controversy to a still higher pitch last month, the supreme Governing Body Council (GBC) of ISKCON, based at Mayapore in West Bengal, has expelled Bhaktipada from the society.

    Bhaktipada, who himself is a member of the council, was accused by the GBC of turning the commune into a "centre of controversy in which bodies have recently been exhumed and former members convicted of murder and charged with child molestation". He has also been charged with attempting to "establish himself as the sole spiritual heir to ISKCON". Bhaktipada has responded by undertaking a publicity tour of the US, organised through a New York-based public relations firm, talking to millions of Americans every day on radio and television talk shows, dismissing the attacks on his commune as part of a right-wing conservative federal campaign against the cult (see interview), Even the spokesmen of the GBC admit that they cannot dislodge him from the commune since "he has built New Vrindavan almost independently". Says Bhaktipada of the GBC: "We have been preaching the glory of Krishna while they bothered themselves about mundane management issues."

    Bhaktipada: controversial haven
    In a way, the commune's problems began three years ago as the population there increased and there was a resource crunch. The devotees were building the entire commune, including the ornate palace of gold with its Italian and French crystal, marble and gold-plating, other temples, a lake and gardens entirely on their own, without blueprints and using just do-it-yourself books. Some money was raised through panhandling, some through generous donations from the 30,000 life members, most of them rich Indians and some, the commune's critics allege, through shady deals.

    These critics included Steven Bryant, a Krishna follower estranged from his faith and his wife Jane, alias Jamuna Devi Dasi, a British devotee. Frustrated and angry, Bryant left the faith and carried on a relentless one-man crusade against Bhaktipada and his commune until someone put two bullets from a high-calibre handgun into his skull in Los Angeles in May last year. But Bryant dead is more of a nightmare for the commune than when he was alive. Says Marshall County Sheriff Donald Borden kirscher, who has stalked the Krishnas unflinchingly for more than two years now: "When Bryant came to us with allegations of child molestation and drug smuggling against the commune we thought he was a man frustrated in life and spurned in marriage. But now he has become a martyr. All that he said has acquired a new significance."
    For months before his death, Bryant had threatened to destroy New Vrindavan to get his wife - who had been married off to another devotee by Bhaktipada - and his children back. When he tried to smuggle his children out, he was caught and beaten up by other devotees. He then got together with other bitter ex-devotees to churn out reams and reams of charges against the commune. And finally, when even that failed, he appeared one day in Moundsville, near New Vrindavan, with a loaded Colt .45 revolver threatening to kill Bhaktipada.

    At that point, the police were vigilant as an attempt on Bhaktipada's life had already taken place: Michael Shockman, another frustrated follower, had hit him on the head with an iron rod and nearly killed him. Says Bhaktipada: "Bryant told the police he had come to complete the job Shockman had started. And yet they did not prosecute him. They just let him go. Even Shockman was given just a minor sentence. He was never charged with attempted murder. All this makes you suspect if there is any collusion between these people and the police." But the police promptly put Bryant into jail. Not long after, he was shot in his van while he sat chanting hare Rama hare Krishna.

    Bryant wife and son: suspicious killing
    The man suspected for the murder is Peter Drescher, another former Krishna follower. Drescher, significantly, had already been convicted for the murder in June 1983 of Charles St Denise whose body, wrapped in polythene and weighed down with bricks, was dug out of a shallow lake near the commune. According to the conviction, Drescher and his accomplice Daniel Reid, who pleaded guilty in court, killed St Denise for reasons impossible to establish.

    The Los Angeles police looking into Bryant's murder and the Marshall County Sheriff Department say Drescher was an enforcer for the commune. The West Virginia police say that St Denise, a regular visitor to the commune, was a cocaine addict and peddler. "We all suspect that drugs may have been involved, particularly considering the brutal murder," says a Marshall County policeman. St Denise was shot at least 10 times, then stabbed several times till the blade of the knife broke and then hammered in the head. In contrast, Bryant's death was more merciful.
    The police say that Drescher has admitted to the fact of having been a spy and said that he had been paid $ 3,000 (Rs 38,600) by Bhaktipada to keep an eye on Bryant. But he claims that he had returned to Columbus, Ohio, a day before Bryant was killed.

    With the police asserting that Drescher was hired by the commune to kill Bryant because of his campaign against Bhaktipada, the trial in Los Angeles promises to be a major media event. But even the most exhaustive trial will not be able to answer all the questions raised by the happenings at the commune, which look interconnected and yet form no logical sequence. For example:

    About a year after St Denise's murder, his five-year-old son as well as the six-year-old son of his self-confessed murderer, Daniel Reid, were found suffocating inside a refrigerator in the commune. According to the Rolling Stones magazine, which carried a damning article on New Vrindavan, they had a dead bunny lodged between them.
    Last November, six months after Bryant was murdered in Los Angeles, his three-year-old son was found dead in a lake at the commune.
    Just two days after Drescher was arrested by the police, an explosion blew up the house of Ranjal Gorby, another commune hanger-on and drug addict with whom Drescher stayed and who reported to the police on Drescher.

    But commune leaders say there is no connection between the incidents. Says Bhaktipada: "There is no evidence linking Drescher with Bryant's death. And his earlier conviction for St Denise's death was purely on circumstantial evidence. It could have only been done in the court here for it was so biased."

    Commune leaders also say that Gorby's house was blown up because he was stealing on the gas company by rigging his supply lines. And the defence on the death of Bryant's child comes from none else than his mother Jamuna, Bryant's estranged wife. Says she: "It was purely an accident. Who would need to kill a three-year-old child?"

    On the other hand, the New Vrindavan leaders find it harder to rebut the other major charge of child abuse against them. The sheriff office has already arrested Frederick Difransisco, assistant to the headmaster of the commune school - called Gurukula - and Larry Gardner. The headmaster has fled to either India or Texas to evade arrest on charges of child molestation. They are accused by Susan Hebel, a former commune member, of repeatedly molesting her 13-year-old son. Bhaktipada doesn't deny the charge outright but says that child abuse is a "huge, huge" problem and happens in every school of the world: "Far from insulting women and children, we look after them much better than the rest of the American society."
    He accuses the police, the press and the courts of having launched a tirade to destroy his movement. "The Rolling Stones magazine will get its answer in court. We are also initiating action against the others," he says. He points out that the investigation against the commune had begun merely on the charges that the devotees were violating copyright laws by printing and selling T-shirts, mementoes, badges and pendants in the name of well-known social organisations and sports clubs to raise money but have now been raised to much higher levels by involved parties. He claims that his publicity blitz has left the Reagan Administration unnerved.

    But one thing neither Bhaktipada nor his followers deny is the sudden fall in donations since New Vrindavan hit the headlines. The commune's Architectural and Planning Director Murti Das points out that the commune's grandiose new temple project - to be completed by 1995 - will need a hundred million dollars (Rs 129 crore): "We have hired the same company that brass-plated the Statue of Liberty. The entrance to the temple will be bigger than the Gateway of India and the prayer hall substantially bigger than St Paul's Cathedral at 48,000 sq ft." Such an enterprise obviously requires large-scale funding. The devotees also admit that while in a normal year 300,000 tourists visit the temple, paying $ 4 (Rs 51) each as entrance fee - besides buying souvenirs and food at the commune shops - the inflow has suffered this year.

    Drescher's trial in Los Angeles promises to be a major media event, with the police asserting that he was hired by the commune to kill Bryant because of his campaign against Bhaktipada.
    But Bhaktipada is confident that the Indian community in the US "which is the second-richest minority after the Jews" will not let him down. If, and when, he succeeds, he will have built the most striking monument in the western world for the glory of Hinduism. However, before that dream is realised he will have to survive a few court cases and a tough, square-jawed and determined Sheriff Bordenkirscher, who has made the investigation of New Vrindavan the biggest challenge of his life.

    প্রায় একশো বছর আগে নদীয়ার তদানীন্তন ডেপুটি ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট কেদারনাথ দত্ত নিজস্ব প্রভাব খাটিয়ে এবং সরকারি নথিপত্রে বদল ঘটিয়ে মুসলমান অধ্যুষিত মিঞাপুরকে ‘মায়াপুর’-এ বদলে ফেলেন। শুধু তাই নয়, সুচতুরভাবে ওই মায়াপুরকে চৈতন্য জন্মস্থান বলে প্রচারও করতে থাকেন।
    প্রামাণ্য নথি হিসেবে কেদারনাথ তুলে ধরেন প্রায় দেড়শো বছর আগে রচিত বৃন্দাবনবাসী নরহরি চক্রবর্তীর ‘ভক্তিরত্নাকর’ গ্রন্থটিকে। ততদিনে চৈতন্যের জন্মভিটে গঙ্গাগর্ভে বিলীন। ফলে তিনি চৈতন্যকালীন নবদ্বীপের একটি কাল্পনিক চিত্র আঁকেন, চৈতন্য জন্মস্থানের নামকরণ করেন ‘মায়াপুর’ এবং তার চারদিকে নয়টি দ্বীপের কল্পনা করে ‘নবদ্বীপ’ নামের নতুন ব্যাখ্যা দেন।

    চৈতন্য জন্মস্থান হিসেবে ‘মায়াপুর তত্ত্ব’ প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে কেদারনাথ দত্ত এই ‘ভক্তিরত্নাকর’-এর আশ্রয় নেন। চাকরি ছেড়ে তিনি ভক্তিবিনোদ ঠাকুর নামে সন্ন্যাসী হন। ১৯১৮-তে অর্থাৎ তাঁর মৃত্যুর চার বছর পর তাঁর পুত্র ভক্তিসিদ্ধান্ত সরস্বতী মায়াপুরে ‘শ্রীচৈতন্য মঠ’ স্থাপন করলে কেদারনাথের প্রচারে ভক্তিবাদের সরকারি সিলমোহর পড়ে।
    এঁর শিষ্য অভয়চরণ দে ১৯৭২-এ মায়াপুরে চন্দ্রোদয় মন্দির নামে ইসকনের হেড অফিস বানান, একই সাথে চৈতন্য জন্মভূমির প্রচার তুঙ্গে ওঠে। প্রভুপাদ এসি ভক্তিবেদান্ত স্বামীর শ্বেতাঙ্গ শিষ্যশিষ্যাদের ঢালাও প্রণামীর দয়ায় কালে কালে চন্দ্রোদয় মন্দির চোখ ধাঁধানো হর্ম্যরাজির সমাহার হয়ে ওঠে।

    যদিও ইসকন চৈতন্যকে নিয়ে নয়, কৃষ্ণকে নিয়ে ভাবিত। আসলে ভক্তদের থাকার ব্যবস্থা, তাদের খাওয়াদাওয়া এবং মন্দির সম্প্রসারণের জন্য ভক্তিবেদান্তর এমন বিস্তৃত জায়গার দরকার ছিল যা নবদ্বীপের ঘনবসতিপূর্ণ এলাকায় মিলত না। স্থান হিসেবে তাই মায়াপুরের নির্বাচন এবং চৈতন্য প্রসঙ্গটা সেখানে ফাউ হিসেবে বিবেচিত ।
    মায়াপুর এখন পুরোদস্তুর পর্যটনের জায়গা। দূরদূরান্ত থেকে অধিকাংশ পর্যটক এখানে আসেন গাড়ি পার্ক করে বনভোজন আর অপরিমিত মদ্যপানের টানে। তাঁদের কাছে চৈতন্যের জন্মস্থান বা চাঁদ কাজির সমাধি কিংবা বল্লালসেনের ঢিবির আলাদা কোনও আকর্ষণই নেই। তাঁরা চন্দ্রোদয় মন্দিরের বিশালত্বে মুগ্ধ হন, অপরিসীম বৈভব দেখে বিস্মিত হন এবং বিদেশি ‘প্রভু’ দর্শনে ধন্য হন। আর হুল্লোড়বাজির শেষে আদ্যোপান্ত ব্যবসায়িক মোড়কে ঢাকা এই মন্দিরের ছোটখাটো স্মারক কিনে ঘর সাজিয়ে গর্ব বোধ করেন।

    দুই,মন্দিরের বৈভব চোখ টানতেই পারে। সে তিরুপতি মন্দিরের বৈভব ও কম নয়। তাতে ভুরু কোঁচকাবার কি আছে? চুরি ডাকাতি করে তো মন্দির বানায় নি।
    তিন, মন্দির ও ট্রাস্টের কি, অধিকৃত জমির দলিল ও রেজিস্ট্রেশন সারটিফিকেট আছে?
    যদি থাকে তো কোনো প্রশ্নই উঠতে পারে না। তাঁরা পয়সা দিয়ে কিনে নিয়েছে। সে মুসলিমদের জমি হলেও বিক্রীত জমি হিসাবেই আইনের চোখে দেখা হবে।
    যদি জমির দলিলনা থাকে তবে প্রশাসনের উচিত সেটা কে রি ইনভোক করা।
    যা খুশি লিখুন কিন্তু যুক্তি ও স্বপক্ষে তথ্য ও রেফারেন্স দিয়ে লিখুন। নয়তো পানসে লাগবে।

    মদের দোকান না থাকলেও অপরিমিত মদ্যপান কর যায় কেবল বনভোজনের সময় পকেটে পছন্দের ব্র্যান্ডের বোতল ভরে নিয়ে। নবদ্বীপ বা উল্টোদিকের স্বরূপগঞ্জে পয়সা ফেললেই বোতলও পাওয়া যায়। মায়াপুরের প্রায় প্রতিটি হোটেলে অবাধে দেহব্যবসা চলে। ওখানেও মেলে, সঙ্গীকে নিয়ে হোটেলেও ওঠা যায়। আর পাঁচটা পর্যটনকেন্দ্রের মতোই।

    "চুরি ডাকাতি করে তো মন্দির বানায় নি।"
    সব মঠমন্দিরের সাথে চুরিডাকাতি জড়িয়ে থাকে। ট্যাক্স চুরি। নবদ্বীপ-মায়াপুরের সামাজিক সমৃদ্ধির ক্ষেত্রে ইসকনের অবদান প্রায় শূন্য।

    "মন্দির ও ট্রাস্টের কি, অধিকৃত জমির দলিল ও রেজিস্ট্রেশন সারটিফিকেট আছে?"
    ইসকনের আইনি হাত যথেষ্ট লম্বা। সিঙ্গুরের জমিতেও বেশ আইনটাইন মানা হয়েছিল বলে জানি। সেখানে তবু কারখানা করার কথা বলা হয়েছিল, এখানে ওই ঢাউস মন্দির রাজ্যের কোন অর্থনৈতিক সুরাহার পথ দেখায়? ওই দলিলের পেছনে কত অসহায় মানুষের দীর্ঘশ্বাস লুকিয়ে আছে, বাস্তুচ্যুত হওয়ার বেদনা লুকিয়ে আছে সেটা যদি কোনও ব্যাপারই না হয় তবে আলোচনা নিরর্থক। আপনার বাড়ি যদি আজ ইসকনের হুমকির কাছে নতজানু হয়ে বিক্রি করতে বাধ্য হন তবে সবকিছু আইন মোতাবেকই হয়েছে বলবেন তো?
    ইসকন এক নয়া উপনিবেশবাদের আদর্শ নমুনা। তাকে সমর্থন আপনি করতেই পারেন, উপনিবেশ নাও মনে করতে পারেন। এক আধবার ইসকন বেড়াতে গেলে সেটা মালুম পাওয়া একটু কঠিনও বটে।

    মন্দির থেকে ইনকাম করলে ভারতে ট্যাক্স ছাড়ের ব্যাপার আছে। এটা যেমন মায়াপুরের ক্ষেত্রে সত্য তেমনি দক্ষিণ ভারতের সব বিত্তশালী মন্দিরের জন্য সত্য। গোল টা কোথায়?
    মন্দির বানাতে টাকা পয়সা কি চুরি করে আনা হয়েছে নাকি।
    আর একশো বছরের রেফারেন্স টা বড্ডো জোলো লাগছে।
    ৪০০ বছর আগে পুরো বাংলায় আলীবর্দীর আর সিরাজের সমম্পত্তি ছিল। তো কি করবো?দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলবো না নিজেকে দুষবো?

  • আসলে ইসকন কিছুতেই ওই পর্যটনকেন্দ্রের তকমাটা নিজের গায়ে লাগাতে চায় না, ভক্তির মোড়কে ঢেকে রাখতে চায়। মন্দির চত্বরের আশেপাশে তাই হোটেলে মাছ-মাংস মেলে না। এই ন্যাকামিটা কিন্তু ডায়মন্ড হারবার, গজলডোবা, মন্দারমণিতে নেই! হ্যাঁ প্রশাসনিক সমস্যা তো বটেই কিন্তু সেটার সমাধানে কোনও সরকারই এগিয়ে আসেনি। নারীঘটিত নোংরামি ইসকনে যথেষ্ট হয়, দিশি বোষ্টমীকে ফেলে রেখে বিদেশি প্রভুর পলায়ন আকছার ঘটে।

    মন্দির বানাতে টাকাপয়সা চুরি করে আনার ব্যাপারটায় আমি অতটা নিশ্চিত নই। আপনিই বা এতটা নিশ্চিত হচ্ছেন কোন রেফারেন্সে? বিত্তশালী মন্দির ব্যাপারটাই তো গোলমেলে। এ বাংলায় ওই রকম বিত্ত আর কটা মন্দিরেরই বা আছে?

    একশো বছরের রেফারেন্সটা ঠিক কী কী কারণে বড্ড জোলো লাগছে তা ডিটেলে বলা যাবে? কেন জোলো লাগবে না তা জানতে পারলেও ভালো হত।

    এক্ষেত্রে যদি আইন মাফিক জমি কিনে থাকে তো কুনো অসুবিধে নাই। নয়তো কৃষ্ণ নগর বি এল আর ও অফিসে আর টি আই করলেই সব জানা যাবে।
    কোনো মহিলা যদি যৌন হেনস্থার স্বীকার হন; তো ইস্কন বলে নিশ্চয় আলাদা ছাড় পাবেনা। একদম বাটাম দিয়ে রাম রহিম করে দেওয়া হোক।
    আর সত্যি ই বুঝতে পারছিনা ১০০ বছর আগে কেদারনাথ মায়াপুর কে চৈতন্যের জন্মস্থান ঘোষণা করে কি এমন ছিঁড়েছিলো?

    টাকা ভারতে চুরি হোক কী বিদেশে সেটা তো শেষ অবধি চুরির টাকাই থাকে। চোরডাকাতরা হয়তো তার খানিকটা হিস্যা ভগবানকে দিয়ে পাপলাঘবের চেষ্টা করে। এক্ষেত্রেও ব্যতিক্রম হওয়ার কারণ নেই। কত মানুষ ক্রাইম করে এখানে কিছুদিন গা ঢাকা দিয়ে ফের দেশে ফিরে যাচ্ছেন কিনা সেসব দেখার লোকও নেই।

    আইনমাফিক জমি কেনাটা বাইরে থেকে দেখা যায়, উচ্ছেদের হুমকি কিংবা যে জমিটা 'দরকার' তার চারপাশে বেড়া তুলে জমির মালিকের পথ আটকে দেওয়াটা দেখা যায় না। বি এল আর ও অফিসও দেখতে পায় না, পেলেও অন্ধ করে দেওয়ার সমস্ত রাস্তা ইসকনের জানা। আর সিঙ্গুরের অধিকাংশ জমি আইন মাফিক কেনা হয়নি বলছেন?

    কলকাতা থেকে মানুষ যাতে কম রাস্তা পাড়ি দিয়ে সরাসরি ইসকনে পৌঁছতে পারেন সে জন্য কৃষ্ণনগর ঢোকার আগে তারণপুর নামে অখ্যাত গ্রামের খড়ে নদীর ওপর ব্রিজ বানানোর বন্দোবস্ত পাকা। অ্যাপ্রোচ রোডের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় জমির মালিকানাও ইসকনের কব্জায়। এই জমিটমিগুলো 'ধর্মস্থান' করতেই কেনা হচ্ছে কিনা তা অবশ্য সঠিক জানি না, যেমন জানি না গাড়ি পার্কের প্রচুর জমি, গোশালা ও গেস্ট হাউস নির্মাণের জন্য বিশাল জায়গা সব ধর্মস্থানের আবশ্যিক অঙ্গ কিনা। হয়তো অন্যরা জানেন।

    কেদারনাথ বর্ধমানকে বার্মিংহাম করার আগেই ধরাধাম ত্যাগ করেছেন। তবে চিন্তা নেই। কলকাতাকে লন্ডন করতে চাওয়া একজনকে সেই মহান দায়িত্ব দিয়ে গেছেন যিনি ফি বছর ওদের রথের দড়ি টানেন। সার্থক উত্তরসূরী!

    রইল বাকি অর্থনৈতিক ‘উন্নয়ন'। ভেবে দেখলাম গরু-ঘোড়া-ছাগল-হাঁস-মুরগি নয় এ বাংলায় মশা হচ্ছে সবচেয়ে উপকারী ‘প্রাণী'। মশারি, ধূপ, তেল ইত্যাদি উৎপাদন ও বিপণনের ক্ষেত্রে প্রত্যক্ষ ও পরোক্ষভাবে কত মানুষই না জড়িত। আর ম্যালেরিয়া কিংবা ডেঙ্গি প্রতিরোধে স্বাস্থ্যব্যবস্থার সাথে জড়িয়ে থাকা মানুষদের ধরলে সংখ্যাটা লাখদুয়েক ছাড়িয়ে যাওয়া বিচিত্র নয়। তাই মশা নিয়ে আর মশকরা নয়, বরং আকাশ-বাতাস কাঁপিয়ে তুলুন এই স্লোগানে — মশা তুমি মশাই হে।

    গুরুতে আগে বেশ কবাডি, ভলি নিদেনপক্ষে ক্যারম খেলা হত। এখন দেখছি হয় লুডো নয়তো দাবা! 'নাটক' কখনও দুজনের সংলাপে জমে নাকি!! যিনি আমাকে এ নাটকে নামালেন তিনি হপ্তাখানেকের মধ্যে আর উঁকি দেননি, না ভুল একবার টুকি দিয়ে চলে গেছেন!!!

  • সেই তো। সিঙ্গুর এর জমি অধিগ্রহণ বেআইনি, কারণ বাম সরকার করেছে। কিন্তু মায়াপুর হোক বা বৈদিক ভিলেজ, এগুলো একদম আইনি পথে করা হয়েছে, আরাবুল কোনো বোমাবাজি করে ভয় দেখায় নি, কেষ্ট তো শুধু জল মুড়ি খাওয়ান, সব চাষি খুশি মনে জমি দান করেছেন একটা মহৎ প্রচেষ্টাকে সফল করার জন্য।

    মায়াপুরে প্রথম জমি কেনা হয় ১৯৭২এ। সে হিসেবে সিদ্ধার্থশঙ্কর, জ্যোতি বসু, বুদ্ধদেব এবং মমতার সরকার নাকে তেল দিয়ে ঘুমিয়েছে অথবা জেগে ড্যাবড্যাব চোখে তাকিয়ে থেকেছে। আর ইসকনের জমি কেনার পরিমাণ ক্রমশ বেড়েছে।

    আংশিক সত্য। জমি কেনার ব্যাপারে ইসকন, বেদিক ভিলেজ, রাজারহাট, সিঙ্গুর সবই এক প্রক্রিয়াভুক্ত।

    বাসুদেব সার্বভৌম, রঘুনাথ শিরোমণি, স্মার্ত রঘুনন্দন বা কৃষ্ণানন্দ আগমবাগীশের স্মৃতিবিজড়িত নবদ্বীপ যখন সব হারিয়ে সবেধন নীলমণি চৈতন্যকে আঁকড়ে ধরে বাঁচার মরিয়া চেষ্টা চালাচ্ছে তখন চৈতন্য জন্মভূমির ইতিহাস সুকৌশলে হাতিয়ে নিচ্ছে ইসকন। এই সাংস্কৃতিক আগ্রাসনের বিরুদ্ধে মত প্রকাশ কর যাবে? সহজ উত্তর, না ।

    মায়াপুর-বামুনপুকুরের পরিবেশগত ভারসাম্যকে নস্যাৎ করে সেখানে একের পর এক আকাশ-ঝাড়ু বাড়ি উঠেই যাচ্ছে। একটা ছোট্ট পঞ্চায়েত এখন প্রায় রাজারহাট-নিউটাউন হয়ে যাচ্ছে চোখের সামনে। এই সামাজিক আগ্রাসনের বিরুদ্ধে মত প্রকাশ কর যাবে? সহজ উত্তর, না।

    একটি বিশেষ রাজনৈতিক দলের আশ্রয়ে না থাকলে নতুন কোনও কর্মপ্রার্থীর ইসকনে কাজের সুযোগ পাওয়া আজকাল মুশকিলই নেহি, নামুমকিন হ্যায়। এই রাজনৈতিক আগ্রাসনের বিরুদ্ধে মত প্রকাশ কর যাবে? সহজ উত্তর, না।

    তাহলে আসুন বিদেশি ‘প্রভু’দের পদলেহনে ব্যস্ত হই অবিকল রামমোহনের মতো। বাংলার গরিব চাষিরা যখন ইচ্ছের বিরুদ্ধে নীলচাষে বাধ্য হচ্ছিলেন, প্রতিবাদ করলেই যখন জুটছিল নীলকরদের অকথ্য অত্যাচার তখন নীলচাষিদের নয় নীলকরদের হয়ে এগিয়ে এসেছিলেন রামমোহন। বেন্টিঙ্ক-দ্বারকানাথের মতো তাঁরও মনে হয়েছিল নীলকরেরা দেশের যে ‘প্রভূত’ উপকার করেছেন তার তুলনায় তাদের দুর্ব্যবহার ধর্তব্যের মধ্যেই নয়। আশার কথা (নাকি আশঙ্কার?)আমাদের মধ্যে রামমোহনরা এখনও আছেন। ধারে ও ভারে তাঁরা ‘ভারতপথিক’-এর সমকক্ষে না হলেও ‘নদীয়াপথিক’-এর শিরোপা পেতেই পারেন!

  • ভালো কাজের সমালোচকের অভাব হয়না। গঠন মূলক আলোচনার খুব অভাব। এই মন্দির বিকাশের ফলে ঐ এলাকার আর্থসামাজিক উন্নয়নে সাহায্য হচ্ছে তার উল্লেখ করতে  সমালোচকদের কষ্ট হয়।   ধ্বংসাত্মক মনোভাব নিয়ে চলা ধান্দাবাজ সমালোচনা বেশি।
