    “It was really, really super scary,” he said, audibly crying. “I’m far away; I couldn’t do anything for her.”

    Selecting and processing Syrian refugees overseas
    Interested refugees will be scheduled for processing in dedicated visa offices in Amman and Beirut. Visa processing capacity will also be enhanced in Turkey.

    Approximately 500 officials, including temporary visa officers, are being deployed to staff these offices.
    An interview will be scheduled with professional, experienced visa officers who will collect information to facilitate issuing visas. Not all applicants interviewed will be selected as part of this initiative but their application may be re-considered in the future.
    Immigration processing will be completed overseas. This includes full immigration medical examination, including screening for communicable diseases such as tuberculosis. Security screening will include collecting biographical information, and biometrics, such as fingerprints and digital photos, which will be checked against immigration, law enforcement and security databases.

    Upon completion of the screening, refugees will be given permanent resident visas and preparations will be made for their transportation to Canada.
    Each Syrian refugee will undergo a robust, multi-layered screening before departing for Canada, including collection of biometrics.

    Public Safety minister Ralph Goodale says the Syrians will be heavily vetted by the UN refugee agency as well as Canadian intelligence and security forces before getting on a plane to Canada.

    "They will be examining the biographical information, the biometrics, the results of the interviews. If they sense there's anything there that causes them concern or discomfort or doubt, they will set aside that file and move on to the next applicant," he says.

    Goodale says the most vulnerable will be chosen to be settled in Canada - that includes women, children, families and the elderly. Goodspeed says that makes sense if they're trying to get large numbers of refugees in, but it could mean single unaccompanied men may have to wait.

    CNN reports that “[t]he refugee program is simply the toughest way for any foreigner to enter the U.S. legally.”
    Moreover, the individuals like those who conducted the Paris attacks — French and Belgian nationals — have absolutely no reason to subject themselves to such scrutiny with fake documents. These individuals could simply use their EU passport to enter the United States without a visa. Belgium and France are part of the United State’s visa waiver program. The only thing you need to do to enter the country is “answer a few questions on a form on the Internet, and have a passport with a digital photograph.”
    It makes no logical sense that individuals like the Paris attackers would seek to use the Syrian refugee program to enter the U.S. when far easier methods are available.'

    Given the abysmal security situation in Syria and the fact that the United States does not maintain a permanent diplomatic presence in the country, it's sometimes difficult for U.S. authorities to gather the information they need to thoroughly vet a Syrian applicant.
    FBI Director James Comey hit on the issue at a congressional hearing last month, when he told lawmakers, "If someone has never made a ripple in the pond in Syria in a way that would get their identity or their interest reflected in our database, we can query our database until the cows come home, but there will be nothing show up because we have no record of them."
    This particularly comes into play when trying to evaluate an applicant's criminal history.
    "In terms of criminal history, we do the best we can with the resources that we have," one senior administration official said.
    Another official emphasized that the vetting process is a holistic one, and they try to take a broader view of an applicant with the available information they're about to aggregate and verify.

    এই হিয়ারিং এর পরেই প্রায় ৪০ জন ডেমোক্র্যাট দলের বিরুদ্ধে গিয়ে রিপাবলিকান্দের সাথে ভোট দেয়। যদিও তার মানে এই নয় যে US আর রিফিউজি অ্যাক্সেপ্ট করবে না।
    হোম ওয়ার্ক - ব্যাখ্যা লিখুন হাউসে ভোট হলেই সেটা কেন ল হয় না।
    আরা ভিসা ওয়েভার ব্যাপারে আর একটা বিল পাশ হয়েছে হাউসে - কোনো EU সিটিজেন যদি গত পাঁচ বছরের মধ্যে ইরাক, ইরাণ, সিরিয়া কিংবা সুদানে ট্র্যাভেল করে থাকে তাহলে তাদের US আসতে ভিসা লাগবে। এটা খুব তাড়াতাড়ি ল হয়ে যাবে।

    কানাডা কী করছে না করছে, সব দেখেই দিয়েছি। আর কেউ এরকম কোন দাবি করেনি, কোন চেক না করে লোকজনকে ঢুকতে দেওয়া হোক। এনিয়ে তর্ক করলে সেটা ছায়ার সাথে যুদ্ধটা চালানো হবে।

    আমেরিকা আর কানাডার মেজরিটি বা একটা বড় অংশের এরকম অ্যাটিচুডের তফাত আরো অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই রয়েছে। যা পলিসিতেও প্রতিফলিত হয়েছে, বা এখনো অনেক ক্ষেত্রে হয়।
    Bowling for Columbine, Sicko মনে পড়ে গেল। এগুলো অস্বীকার করা যায় কি ? (ব্যক্তিগতভাবে আপনি এরকম অনেক মত ই সাব্স্ক্রাইব না ই করতে পারেন। )

    তবে হ্যাঁ, মেইন্স্ট্রিম মিডিয়া রিফ্যুউজিদের দায়ী করছে ও সেটা তথ্যপ্রমাণ সহ করছে, অন্যেরা সেটা করছে না আর সেটা তাদের কগনিটিভ এবিলিটির সমস্যা এটা বলার পর যখন দেখা যায়, সি এন এন এর মত মেইনস্ট্রিম মিডিয়াও প্যারিস অ্যাটাক আর রিফ্যুজি ইস্যু একসাথে আনতে মানা করছে, তখন সেটা উল্লেখ করাতে আমার প্রিয় সি এন এন বলে ভুলভাল খোঁচা দিয়ে কোন লাভ আছে কি ? ঃ)
    আমি তো কখনৈ এরকম কোন দাবি করিনি, মেইনস্ট্রিম মিডিয়ায় বেরোনো মানেই সে খবর অচ্ছুৎ। তবে সেটাকেই সদা সর্বদা একমাত্র ও শেষ কথাও মনে করিনা। ( নন মেইনস্ট্রিম মিডিয়া নিয়েও একই কথা)। ওটা বরং আপনার দাবি ছিল , তাই 'আপনার প্রিয়' মেইনস্ট্রিম মিডিয়ায় বেরোনো আপনার বিপরীত মতের প্রতিবেদনটি দিয়েছিলাম মাত্র।

    The federal government is ramping up efforts in a race against time to bring 10,000 Syrian refugees to Canada in just two weeks.

    During a briefing on the resettlement plan in Ottawa Wednesday, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister John McCallum said officials have managed a "massive" increase in capacity for processing of Syrians in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon, including interviews and security and health screening.

    'Throughout the seven months it took Samer and his family to make their way from Syria to the United States, he told himself that the risk and cost would be worth it they could swap their war-ravaged homeland for what he believed was a “land of opportunity, hope and peace”.

    But the family’s arrival in the US has proved more stressful than the journey: days after they reached Texas they found themselves the unwitting subject of a national debate over potential terrorist infiltration.

    Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said that Samer, his wife and two sons – aged two and five – could be the embodiment of America’s “worst nightmare”. Donald Trump speculated that the family, who are Christian, could be members of Islamic State.

    A month later, Samer and his family are still being held in indefinitely in separate detention centres – and his belief in America as a beacon for asylum seekers is dimming by the day.

    “My very small children are in prison,” said Samer, speaking by phone from an immigration detention centre near San Antonio. “I had no idea that the political climate was so against Syrian refugees. If I had known that it was so terrible here I wouldn’t have brought my family.”

    In his first press interview, Samer said he was struggling to reconcile his perception of the US as a Christian nation of immigrants with his own predicament. Now he fears his family will not be released and reunited by Christmas.

    “I definitely thought America would accept me,” said Samer, who has been identified by a pseudonym to protect family member.

    Speaking through an interpreter, he appeared mystified by the idea that he could be considered a threat. “We are the ones running away from war,” he told the Guardian.

    It was Samer’s bad luck to arrive just days after 130 people were killed in coordinated gun and bomb attacks in Paris. Although all of the attackers identified so far were European nationals, US politicians suggested that terrorists could be posing as Syrian refugees in order to infiltrate the country.

    As national politicians questioned the calibre of the federal government’s vetting procedures for refugees, at least 30 state governors – including Texas governor Greg Abbott said Syrian refugees would no longer be welcome.

  • Samer নামটা পড়ে একই নামের একটি ছেলের কথা মনে পড়ে গেল। ও অবশ্য লেখে Semere। ছেলেটি এরিট্রিয়ান ক্রিশ্চান। এখন আমেরিকায় আছে। বউ আর দুই ছেলে-মেয়েকে নিজের কাছে আনতে চায়। এরিট্রিয়ায় ট্রাভেল রেস্ট্রিকটেড। ওর বউ ছেলে-মেয়ে দুটোকে নিয়ে প্রথমে কিছুদিন সুদানে ছিল, তারপর ইথিওপিয়ায়। কয়েকবার আমেরিকান ভিসা রিজেক্ট হওয়ার পর নভেম্বরের ফার্স্ট উইকে ভিসা ইন্টারভিউ সাকসেসফুল হয়। এক সপ্তাহ পরে ওদের ভিসা কালেক্ট করতে বলে। ওরাও টিকিট কেটে তৈরী হতে শুরু করে। ইচ্ছে করেই হাতে কিছুদিন সময় রাখে সব গুছিয়ে নেওয়ার জন্য। ডিসেম্বর দশের টিকিট। এক সপ্তাহ পরে ভিসা নিতে গিয়ে শোনে প্রিন্টার খারাপ, তাই নাকি ভিসা প্রিন্ট হয়নি। পরের সপ্তাহে আসতে হবে। পরের সপ্তাহে গিয়ে শোনে প্রচুর ডকুমেন্ট জমে আছে নাকি, তাই দেরি হচ্ছে, আবার পরের সপ্তাহে যেতে বলে ওদের। পরের সপ্তাহেও একই কথা। এবার মেয়েটি বেঁকে বসে। ভিসা না নিয়ে সে এম্ব্যাসি ছেড়ে নড়বে না। দিন দুয়েক পরের আরেকটা ডেট দেওয়া হয় তাকে। সেদিন গিয়ে শোনে তার আর বাচ্চা মেয়েটির ভিসা হয়েছে, কিন্তু ছেলের ভিসা এখনও প্রিন্ট হয় নি। সেদিন সম্ভবত ডিসেম্বরের তিন তারিখ। আর সাতদিন বাদে ওদের প্লেনে চড়ার কথা। তার দিন দুএকের মধ্যে ইথিওপিয়ার ভিসাও শেষ হয়ে যাচ্ছে। মেয়েটি পরের দিন আবার ছোটে এম্ব্যাসিতে। ইতিমধ্যে অনলাইন স্ট্যাটাস চেকে দেখাচ্ছে ওদের সকলের ভিসাই রেডি ফর পিক আপ। এই দিন মেয়েটি যা শুনবে সেটি মোক্ষম। প্রিন্টার অবশেষে কাজ করেছে। ওদের সকলের পাসপোর্টই ওর হাতে তুলে দিয়ে এম্ব্যাসি অফিসার বলেন - আমার একটা ছোট্ট ভুল হয়েছে। তোমার দেশের জন্য একটা স্পেশাল রুল আছে যেটা আমি ফলো করি নি। তোমাদের সকলের পাসপোর্টেই ভিসা রয়েছে, কিন্তু তোমরা ট্র্যাভেল করতে পারবে না। আরো একটা চিঠি লাগবে তোমাদের, সেটা আমি খুবই তাড়াতাড়ি করিয়ে দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করব। কিন্তু সেটা না হওয়া পর্যন্ত তোমরা আমেরিকায় ঢুকতে পারবে না। এখনও পর্যন্ত সেই চিঠি হয় নি। খুব চাইছি ক্রিসমাসটা যেন Semere ওর বউ-ছেলে-মেয়ের সাথে কাটাতে পারে। কি হবে কে জানে!

    A mosque in Toronto is creating a name for itself for welcoming the LGBT community, as well as to people of all faiths.

    Founder El-Farouk Khaki said it was important for him and his co-founders to create the Unity Mosque, or the El-Tawhid Juma Circle, as a space that is welcoming to anyone.

    "There's a notion, I think, out there that Muslim spaces are not welcoming, that they're not inclusive, that they don't embrace non-Muslims, or that women or LGBTQI people are somehow not welcome," said Khaki, who spoke to CBC's Matt Galloway on Metro Morning. "And so this is an intentional space designed to actually bring everybody into it."

    The mosque is hosting its 13th annual Peace Iftar at sunset on June 19. Iftar is a meal that is eaten at the end of a day's fast. Khaki said he expects 150 to 180 people to attend the communal meal.

    The meal is open to Muslims and non-Muslims, and the men and women are not separated, as they traditionally are in mosques. The women are also not required to wear a veil if they do not choose to.

    পাইয়ের দেওয়া লিংকে বিপ্লবের এবং আরও কয়েকজন লিগাল-ইমিগ্রান্টের বক্তব্য পড়লাম।
    মেনলি দু'টো আপত্তি। একটা হলো, ইল্লিগালদের জন্যে ক্রাইম বাড়বে/বাড়ছে এবং অন্যটা হলো, আমরা কতো কষ্ট ক'রে লেখাপড়া/কাজকর্ম শিখে নিজেদের যোগ্যতায় জায়গা পেয়েছি অথচ ওরা কেমন আইন, বর্ডার এইসব টপকে ঢুকে পড়েছে!

    দ্বিতীয়টা নিয়ে এটুকুই বলার (যে কথাটা এই বিরোধিতার মধ্যেও একজন লিগাল-ইমিগ্রান্টও বলেছেন বা মেনে নিয়েছেন) যে, ইল্লিগালরা বহু প্রতিকূলতার মধ্যে দিয়ে, অনেক সময় জীবনের ঝুঁকি নিয়েও এসেছেন সেই একই লক্ষ্যে - একটু ভালোভাবে বাঁচা - সেই সুযোগটুকু অন্ততঃ তাদের দেওয়া হোক।

    প্রথমটা (ক্রাইম ও ইল্লিগালদের সংযোগ) নিয়ে বিপ্লবের বক্তব্য যে, যাকিছু তথ্য ওনার হাতে এসেছে সেসবই সমস্ত ইমিগ্রান্টদের নিয়ে। শুধুমাত্র ইল্লিগালদের সাথে ক্রাইম-রেটের সম্পর্কের ব্যাপারে বিশেষ তথ্য নেই।

    Today was perhaps the fourth or the fifth day in a row when I was worried for my life while taking a commute back home. It’s been the same every day, and every other day.

    I book a cab or an auto. For those of whom my Muslim identity is apparent from my name, the drill is simple, they pick my call, tell me they are arriving at my location and then defiantly cancel the ride. For the inattentive ones, who are dissuaded from scrutinising the origins of my name because of my South Delhi address, the realisation is more personal.

    First, they’ll look at me, and look at me closely. The choice of clothes may confuse them momentarily but there is never a moment’s hesitation to pounce to the obvious question: “Aap Musalman ho kya?” “Aap Musalman toh nahi?”

    There have been days when I told them I am not. When I pretended that I am a Hindu. “Oh, mujhey aapke naam se laga aap who ho,” they grin and tell me.

    There have been days when I made a definite attempt to strike a conversation with my driver just to display my effortless use of phrases like “Hey Bhagwan” and “Hanji” hoping to convey my utter “Hinduness”, when I didn’t dare pick my mother’s phone too afraid, I might let out a “khuda hafiz”.

    And there have been days when I haven’t uttered as much as a sigh, fearing something might expose my subterfuge, fearing what he could do to me if he finds out.

    There have also been days when I have been defiant, less afraid, though only for a moment, and owned up to the fact that Im Muslim. The sudden change in bartav is unmissable, the stiffness, the stern tight-lipped scowl, sometimes outright disgust.

    Today was one of those days.

    “Aap log chaley kyun nahi jaatey..kyun Hinduon ko maar rahe ho?” he asked me. I was quiet. He prodded: “Pata nahi kya dikkat hai, bas ek din ye musalman khatam hojaye toh desh mein sab theek hojayega.” Again, silence from me.

    I usually message a friend at times like these to distract myself or to convey the risk Im putting myself in by taking public transport in this country.

    Today, I couldn’t even do that. My bladder felt solidly full, as though it would burst and release not urine but garbled prayers I was muttering.

    I eventually made it back home alive. My mother opened the door for me. Her intent eyes and creased forehead and a question: “Bahar halat kaisey hai ab?”

    She already knows everything of course. There’s always news blaring from behind when I come home, and in front of it is my father, who was slowly but painfully learning the lesson to deal in the present, to not drag history around like a ball and chain, to not be sinking in the quagmire of the past – “Pehle sab theek tha phirse hojayega” and all.

    “Please. Do me this one, great favor,” says my mum and here her voice plummeted a register, and the tone was full and sad, “Office mat jao. Stay home for a few days. Ghar se kaam karlo.”

    The conversation ends in silence. We can drop it at that, our privilege plays its part.

    But it makes me, a Muslim, laugh to hear the fears of the nationalist, scared of infection, invasion, contamination, when this is peanuts, compared to what we fear every day - dissolution, disappearance, destruction – when we step out of our homes, when we bolt our doors in the night.

    When my mother tells me not to go out, to never speak my mind, when my brother glares at me [as he will when he reads this] for telling you how angry I am, I feel small and absurdly petulant and, worse yet, I suspect they are right. I always suspected they were right. For a brief irrational moment, I may have thought the fear is fictional – a relic from the past. Now I wish, more rationally, that it was.

    Can you imagine the weight of our identity? It is an enormous rucksack so impossibly heavy that even though losing it meant losing everything, it is infinitely easier to leave all the baggage here, along with the charred remains of our past, and walk into the blackness.

    So, please don’t ask me to “be safe” to “take care” to “stay low” because I need to and not because it is all that is expected of us. We are faceless and preferably nameless to you. My religion and my identity is nothing but a tight band, a throbbing vein, and a needle to you. And this belonging you want me to believe in, this thing, it seems some long, dirty lie.

    My rage may be the only thing keeping me awake today, and I will feed off it in that righteous way you end up doing, when you are forbidden to mention out loud the wrong you are being done.

    But remember this: A man is a man is a man. His family threatened, his beliefs attacked, his way of life destroyed, his whole world coming to an end - he will fight. Make no mistake. He won't let the new order roll over him without a struggle
