    These few minutes may make a difference between my friend
    living or dying ! Kindly consider.
    I am Debashis Mandal, a current post-doctoral researcher at
    Arizona State University. I bring to your kind notice the plight of
    my colleague and friend at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)
    Kharagpur, India, Mr. Anirban Bhattacharya. He is 28 years old
    and is also pursuing his Ph.D. in the field of RF MEMS at IIT
    Kharagpur, since Fall 2010. Besides being my friend, he has an
    outstanding academic record. He is the recipient of the IIT
    Director’s Gold Medal in 2010, for being the university topper of
    the Masters’ program. Besides, he had also bagged the ‘Best
    Thesis Award’ for the same year. He also holds fellowship of one of India’s reputed a Talent
    Search competition (JBNSTS :Jagdish Bose National Science Talent Search). In research, he has
    been regularly publishing in IEEE journals even while battling cancer. Personally, he is very
    helpful to anyone seeking his assistance and goes out of his way to ensure people achieve their
    potential.
    About one and half years back in May, 2013, he was diagnosed with metastatic Ewing's
    Sarcoma, a type of pediatric bone cancer. He received 16 cycles of chemotherapy and
    radiotherapy, followed by Autologous Stem Cell Transplant (Bone Marrow Transplant) in
    August 2014.
    Unfortunately, in February 2015, about 6-months after his BMT, his PET-CT scan has revealed a
    relapse and further progression of the cancer (report attached).
    Doctors have stated that they had already exhausted the better regimens of chemotherapy and
    advised Anirban to seek any alternative treatment available or participate in clinical trials as a
    last resort.
    Luckily in the US, a clinical trial specifically for his type of cancer has been showing
    consistently good results for the past few years. This is a Phase I trial as part of the FANG
    system of clinical trials to research efficacy of personalized immunotherapy in targeted treatment
    of metastatic cancer. It is being led by Dr. Maurizio Ghisoli, M.D. at the Mary Crowley Cancer
    Research Center, Dallas, Texas. Even though metastatic Ewings' has a prognosis of at best 10 -
    15 % only, his trial has seen a success of 50 % and with participants leading event-free lives for
    the past 2 - 3 years, it seems likely to be a cure for this type of cancer. At the time of
    participation, the patients did not have hope of even surviving 3 - 4 months. The cost of
    participation (initial surgery and hospitalization) has been billed at INR 85.4 lakhs (~ $137,000).
    Being an Indian resident, he does not have insurance coverage in the US.
    As Anirban belongs to a low income family in India, he is unable to afford this expensive
    treatment anymore. A significant amount has already been consumed by earlier treatment and

    the remainder is required fast.

  • Update: No noticeable improvement was observed in Anirban's condition till yesterday. Doctor's will include some physiotherapy exercises today to try and induce some sensation in his limbs and gastro-intestinal regions. Still, 3 more days to watch and pray for.
