  • আমার এক বন্ধু, পশ্চিমবঙ্গের একটি বিখ্যাত পরিবারের ছেলে। আপাতত: আমেরিকার একটি শহরে মৃত্যুরোগের কবলে। সময় কাটানোর জন্য তার উপায় হল ছোট-ছোট স্কেচের মত লেখা, জীবনের বিভিন্ন ঘটনা নিয়ে। এই লেখাগুলি সে মেইল করে বন্ধুদের পাঠায়।

    অনেক লেখাই একান্ত পারিবারিক, বন্ধু ও আত্মীয়-মহলের বাইরে কারো সে সব লেখায় কোন আগ্রহ থাকতে পারে না। কিন্তু কিছু কিছু লেখায় সেই সব মানুষদের কথা আসে, যাঁদের আমরা পাবলিক পার্সোনা বলি। ভাবলাম, সেই ধরনের নির্বাচিত মেইলগুলো একটা থ্রেড খুলে ভাগ করে নেই।

    এই মেইলটি হল বাচ্চা বয়সে শেখ মুজিবর রহমানকে দেখা নিয়ে। শেখ সাহেব তখন পাকিস্তান থেকে পালিয়ে ভারতে আশ্রয় নিয়ে আছেন।


    "One night after the elections in Pakistan, we drove to Dr Ashok Mitra's house. It was getting quite hot, but it was night, and Dr Ashok Mitra and wife, Gauri Mitra, were stting on their lawn. There were a few men, who were introduced to my father and mother. I was enjoying the cool night, and wanted to go into the government bungalow, to see their collection of Tagore songs, in long playing records, which was vast, and it interested me.
    I never knew that the four men were actually fugitives from Dhaka University, fleeing the crackdown by Pakistan. This was when the troops had landed in East Pakistan, and Mrs Indira Gandhi had still not had time to give them refugee status; to those fleeing east Pakistan. The year was 1971, since my grandfather had passed away in New Delhi, from cancer that year. .
    I was eleven years old, so I could care less about fugitives! I just wanted to see the Mitra's record collection. Well, after having beverages, and me, seeing their records collection, we left. That is when I heard my parents discussing about the four men on the lawn, and why they were introduced by single first names. .
    I was ready to go to bed, since I had school the next morning. My sister was with us too.
    I always knew women who drove (all my friend's mothers in Pune, drove, since their husband's were in non-family stations, and they were Maharashtrians), and OPEC had not formed yet. My mother used to take Kanchibhai(my grandfather), food to his hospital. Gauri Mitra had a white foreign car, and she would visit my grandparents at the hospital, and sometime, would bring them food.

    More later.....It will end when I was in Kanpur, enjoying a very hot summer's day next to the swimming pool in the Kanpur Club, and heard that they had shot most everyone of the Rahman family, including the little boy, who ran into a closet to hide, but they shot him anyway,,,,,,, "

  • একটা ছোট্ট ধন্ধ - শেখ মুজিব তো ৭১এর প্রথম থেকেই পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানের জেলে। উনি কি করে ভারতে আসবেন? বাংলাদেশ যুদ্ধ শেষ হওয়ার পর ওনাকে মুক্তি দিতে বাধ্য হয় ইয়াহিয়া।
    কোথাও কিছু ভুল হচ্ছে। উনি বোধ হয় রাসেল আর ওর ভাইদের দেখেছেন।

  • কল্লোল ঠিক বলেছ। যাদের কে দেখা হয়েছিলো তারা সম্ভত: তাজউদ্দিন আহমেদ( মুজিবের প্রধানমন্ত্রী), খোন্দকার আহমেদ- আর পার্কসার্কাসের বাংলাদেশ হাই কমিশনের ভদ্রলোক যিনি স্বাধীন বাংলদেশ সরকারের পক্ষে এসে ওই বাড়ি থেকে ""স্বাধীন বাংলা বেতার কেন্দ্র'' চালিয়েছিলেন।

  • In Greater Kailash where we lived in 1971, there were huge houses with lots of lawns, and in one of them, the Bangladesh.... whatever, since they were not a country yet, set up a gramaphone record on a garden chair with loudspeakers and they would play Bangla songs.
    I was delighted since we could hear Radio Pakistan from Delhi, but the shortwave broadcast from East Pakistan, never played any familiar songs.
    This house in Greater Kailash was playing songs, Amar Bangladesh ' which had words like 'Jibananander ruposhi bangla, ruper je tar nei ko shesh.....' and flew the old Bangladesh flag with the golden map of Bangladesh inside the red circle.
    We had had two air incursions from Pakistan, and our big plate glass windows had to be taped up with brown paper, since there was a fine of Rs 250 if they could spot light from outside, at nights.
    The earlier Pakistan war of 1965, my mother and GeetaKakima were in New Delhi cantonment. Every night Geetakakima used to listen to how many planes returned, since Jyotikaku flew the bombers, Canberra. We also had trenches dug with sides embanked, since Pakistan had Napalm bombs which had liquid fire, all courtesy of USA.
    In a few days, General Niazi surrendered to an Indian general, and soon Bangladesh would play their national anthem 'Amar Sonar Bangla'. Then came the rage to learn Rabindrasangeet, which had been forbidden by the Pakistan govt. The only country where people had died for using their own language, 'Ekushe February---- Feb 21' is celebrated in Bangladesh.
    This was 1971/2 and then we moved to Kanpur in 1973. We always thought of Kanpur as full of flies, since that is where the railway station was. So living in the lush green Cantonment, with Kanpur Club just two minutes by bike, and 10 minutes to school, was great.
    It was somewhere in 1974, one hot summer, I was in Kanpur club, after playing squash. After the game, I sat next to the outdoor swimming pool, that I got the news that the Rahman family had been gunned down. The rumor was USA had the news, that it was coming, and had warned Sheik Mujibur Rahman but .....
