    IISER Pune is currently in the phase of "landscaping" the campus. Assume that for whatever reason, the landscape committee has decided that:

    a) the campus should look as "natural" as possible,

    b) the biodiversity of the campus (both floral and faunal) should be maximum at steady state,

    c) the landscape should be as much self-sustainable as practicable such that maintenance costs are as low as possible (i.e. fewest possible gardeners),

    d) there should be absolutely minimum (ideally none) compromise with the functioning of the institute,

    e) no compromise with the safety of the residents of the campus in any form (so introducing lions from Gir forest is out).

    Unfortunately, the committee has run out of money and therefore is in no position to hire professionals for the job. Therefore, it has appointed you (!) as the consultant for the project. Your job is to create a plan for landscaping the IISER Pune campus. For this purpose, you can disregard future land usage and assume that whatever is the current layout of buildings is the final. Also, assume that there will be enough money to implement your plans, it is the sustenance that has to be minimalistic. The plan should include:

    i) Your thoughts on how to maximize the biodiversity of the campus. Remember, at the very least, it should be greater than what it is currently. What are the components needed? How will that maximize the biodiversity?

    ii) Given the location and climate of the campus, how will your plan interact with the local neighbourhood (both in the short and the long run)?

    iii) Specifics of your plan: e.g. if you think that trees are needed, then name which trees and why. If you want to introduce animals, then name which ones and why. If you want a particular land usage, then where will you locate it in the campus?

    iv) How your plan is compliant with the guidelines set by the committee. In case it is not at some points, say so. Feel free to critique your own ideas: the professional will not be graded, you will be.

    Note: The fewer unrealistic assumptions you make, more marks you get. The more realistic your solutions are, and the more you deal in specifics, the more marks you get. The better you are able to articulate the pros and the cons of what you are doing, more marks you get.

    Restrictions:

    1. You have no control on what is outside the campus (e.g. NCL colony, Someshwarwadi or the Panchavati hills). However, you have control on what to do with the landscape inside the campus.

    2. You cannot go against the guidelines laid by the landscape committee. They are sacrosanct.

    3. You cannot change the position of any of the present built structures.

    4. Do not assume that even if there are no gardeners, you can co-opt the residents of the campus (i.e. the students and the faculty) to the gardener's job. Just not happening.

    5. 15000 characters (spaces included). No diagrams or tables (as you are filling it through a form).

    6. Last date of submission: 1700 hrs on 04-Nov-2018.

    I am right now correcting the third assignment (IISER Landscape) that you guys submitted. There have been several gems already like:
    a) Create a pond and stock it with Salmon fish (unfortunately, this was the one that I had randomly picked first on day 1, which will explain why it took so long for me to get back to correcting these assignments).
    b) Let there be free ranging chickens in the campus
    c) Let there be fruit trees on the campus so that students can relive their childhood by throwing stones at them (multiple people have written this)
    and so on.

    However, there is one that I absolutely need to share with all of you. I am not yet done with correcting all of them, but I heavily doubt that anyone will be able to beat this one. Needless to say, if someone manages to "better" this, I will be happy to share with all.

    My brilliant plan to maximize biodiversity in IISER is to BURN IT TO THE GROUND!!!
    With Diwali here, it would be a spectacular show to watch as people would come up with innovative ideas for the above.

    When I say BURN IISER TO THE GROUND, I actually mean create CONTROLLED FIRES around the campus (the above phrase was just used for entertainment purposes).

    How does this help with increasing Biodiversity?

    IISER currently has a very artificial landscape with lawns, fancy bushes and other flora not native to this region. Therefore the amount of non-indigenous birds and other fauna found around IISER is more than expected (indigenous fauna are unable to thrive in this environment). In addition, maintenance of this landscape is very costly as we have to provide artificial conditions for this purpose (such as extra water and nutrients).

    Now according to the mentioned plan, we set this entire artificial landscape on fire (Idea credits - Tribal people from around the World, Slash and Burn Agriculture).
    Note : The fires are controlled (not an easy task but can be done considering the number of fire extinguishers that are lying around in IISER) and only meant for the plants and waste, and not buildings or people (whether dogs fall into the first category or the second is currently under debate - a topic the institute is divided upon).

    Methodology - How do we set IISER on fire?
    One very important factor which determines the success of the idea is the cost of implementing the plan (especially considering IISER’s current funding scenario). In this case, the cost is extremely minimal. Students would be more than happy to provide their services, in fact many will be willing to pay to implement the plan. Of course, we could always hold auditions and ensure that the selected people are the least unruly of the batch and that their fires are easier to control. We could even make it a competition and have a winner (the person who burns with minimal collateral damage and in the most innovate way) who would receive a prize such as freedom from 75% attendance or an A in BIO201 course. The area can first be flooded with smoke so as to drive all the animals anyway (need to make PETA happy). A control squad armed with fire extinguishers, water guns, water balloons, sand buckets etc. is kept ready to extinguish the fires. Again considering the number of students who turned up for Capture the Flag and Lazer Tag (organised in our college as part of Karavaan) this to will be an easy task.

    When is the best time to carry out this part of the plan (PHASE 1)?
    Summer time!! Most of the students are home and so probability of student injuries are very low. The poor project students staying back and working over the holidays could definitely do with some entertainment. The campus can be burnt in parts with a time gap of a week or so between consecutive fires. Thus once the whole campus is burnt down, the rains step in and this promotes growth of new and natural indigenous fauna.

    Now that we have experienced the spectacle (BOOM BANG WHOOSH!!! SKOODUSH DUM DUM BAMMM!!!!!!!!!!!), we are ready for the next part of the plan.

    The next part of the plan is……. DO NOTHING.
    Actually the only thing you do do is wait. And it be a pretty long wait!!! However this plan works really well in the long term, so worth the wait. 10 years pass by, and the flora is completely back! However this time it is not that unnecessary fake artificial flora that was previously planted, but the natural indigenous plants, shrubs and trees which thrive well in this region. Also burning the place can destroy a lot of the old spores thus most of the invasive harmful foreign species do not grow back!

    Come back to 10 years later, we now have a wild green campus full of trees and greenery (YAY!!). We don’t need to spend much on the maintenance of this environment as these are flora evolved to survive in this local environment. Additional trimming and slashing to ensure that the plants don’t grow into the classrooms is all the maintenance required. The fauna too is indigenous again as it is giving an environment it can thrive it (*Celebratory noises from Nationalists*).

    To give an initial boost to floral growth, we could use natural fertilisers such as Guano (can secure from the Ecology department) and other animal poop (again refer Ecology Department).

    Another problem that affects this biodiversity is the Dog Problem. Due to human interventions (the negative ones such as feeding and petting rather than the positive ones such as throwing a shoe), the dog numbers have drastically gone up. This poses a MAJOR threat to biodiversity as they kill and eat other species (Example: small birds), and their numbers drop.

    How do we deal with this problem?

    The Burning of the Campus will be sufficient to chase the dogs out initially. However, considering that they are worse than cockroaches in IISER, they’ll be BACK! So for that we need to set dog traps around the campus, ban the dog lover’s club and expel anybody who tries to get dogs on campus.

    Once we implement both these plans, we will get a happy, biodiversity- rich, beautiful, green campus which is super easy and inexpensive to maintain.
