    Bloomberg has obtained emails from Wal-Mart where an executive calls Feb sales a ‘total disaster’

    “In case you haven’t seen a sales report these days, February MTD sales are a total disaster,” Jerry Murray, Wal-Mart’s vice president of finance and logistics, said in a Feb. 12 e-mail to other executives, referring to month-to-date sales. “The worst start to a month I have seen in my ~7 years with the company.”

    Executives blame the weakness on the expiration of the payroll tax break and delayed tax returns.

  • দ্রি সাহেব, এ টেকনোলজির কথা আগেও লিখেছি। এ সব নতুন কিছু কিন্তু নয়। একেবারেই নয়। যেমন ধরুন এই এক ঝাঁক মিলে নিজেদের মধ্যে কন্সাল্ট করে ডিসিশন নেওয়া ব্যাপারটা প্রায় বছর দশেক আগে থেকেই চলছে। ঝাঁকে ঝাঁকে রিসার্চ পেপার বেরিয়েছে, এখনো বেরোচ্ছে।
    ফ্ল্যাপিং উইং/পেন্টা রোটর/ফিক্সড উইং ইত্যাদি মোটামুটি ১৫ সেন্টিমিটার স্কেলে মোটামুটি এস্টাবলিশড। নানান মডিফিকেশন চলছে। কিন্তু

    তবে যেটি খবরে প্রকাশিত নয় সেটি হল, পর্যায়ক্রমিক ব্যর্থতার পর ডারপা (DARPA) আপাতত অন্য একটি বিষয়ের উপর ঝুঁকেছে। বায়ো ইন্সপায়ার্ড মেশিন না বানিয়ে মেশিন ইন্সপায়ার্ড বায়ো জাতীয় কিছু বানাতে। মৌমাছির সাইজের ফ্ল্যাপিং উইং না বানিয়ে, মৌমাছিকেই যদি প্রশিক্ষণ দেওয়া যায়। ওরা হিসেব কষে দেখেছে, এতে খরচাপাতি কম। আপাতত উইন্ডটানেলে মৌমাছির যাত্রাপথ বিশ্লেষণ চলছে।
    শুনলে অবশ্য আপাতভাবে বেশ হাস্যকর লাগে। :)

    The documentary provided photographic evidence showing that guards regularly searched the bedrooms and kitchens of foreign staff. “They tell us they are the police here,” a Spanish woman complained. Workers were allegedly frisked to check they had not walked away with breakfast rolls.

  • আমরা কতটা ভালো আছি ?

    গ্লোবাল ওয়ার্মিং বা পৃথিবীর উশ্নায়ানের কথা আমরা সকালেই জানি। পৃথিবীর উষ্ণতা বেড়েছে। গ্লেসিয়াররা গলে যাচ্ছে। পরিসংখ্যান বলে গত ১০০ বছরের প্রথম ৫০ rবছরের তুলনায় শেষের পঞ্চাশ বছরে প্রচন্ড বৃষ্টিপাত(extrem event) অনেক বেশি হয়েছে। অল্প বৃষ্টির সংখ্যা কমেছে। ২০০০ সালের পর থেকে খরা বা অনাবৃষ্টি যুক্ত বছরের সংখ্যাও বেড়েছে। যেখানে প্রতি দশকে একটি কি দুটি খরা যুক্ত বছর থাকত সেখানে শেষ দশকে তিনটি খরা। এ সব নিয়ে অনেক গবেষনা পত্র লেখা হয়েছে। কিন্তু প্রশ্ন হলো এ নিয়ে মানুষ কতটা সচেতন যারা ছাপাচ্ছেন তারা কতটা মন থেকে বিশ্বাস করছেন ।
    বাতাসে গ্রীন হাউস গ্যাস (কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড, মিথেন, নাইট্রাস অক্সাইড, CFCs) এর পরিমান বাড়ছে। এবার প্রশ্ন হলো গ্রীন হাউস গ্যাস কী ? এবং এর প্রয়োজনীয়তাই বা কী ? উত্তর হলো এরা না থাকলে পৃথিবীর উষ্ণতা দাঁড়াত -১৮ ডিগ্রী সেন্টিগ্রেট। কিন্তু বাস্তবে তা ১৫ ডিগ্রী। ছোট বেলায় ভূগোলে আমরা পড়েছি সূর্যের থেকে আসা বিকিরিত তাপে প্রথমে গরম হয় ভূপৃষ্ঠ, তাপর ভূপৃষ্ঠের বিকিরণে ধীরে ধীরে বায়ু মন্ডল গরম হয়। এবং এই সময়েই বায়ু মন্ডলে উপস্থিত গ্রীন হাউস গ্যাসেরা সেই তাপকে শোষণ করে। ফলে ভুপৃষ্ট থেকে বিকিরিত এই তাপ বেরিয়ে যেতে পাড়ে না। বায়ুমন্ডলের মধ্যেই বদ্ধ হয়ে থাকে। এবং বায়ু মন্ডলের তাপমাত্রাকে ধরে রাখতে সাহায্য করে। তারমানে গ্রীন হাউস গ্যাস এর উপস্থিতি প্রয়োজন কিন্তু এর পরিমান বৃদ্ধি মারাত্মক হতে পারে।
    গত দু দশকে মধ্যবিত্তের অবস্থার অনেক উন্নতি যে হয়েছে তা স্পষ্ট। পৃথিবী জুড়ে চলেছে ইন্দাস্ত্রিয়াlলায়জেসন। তৈরী হয়েছে পারমানবিক বিদ্যুত কেন্দ্র। মধ্যবিত্তের চাকরি বেড়েছে। বাড়িতে এসেছে টিভি, রেফ্রিজারেটর, মাইক্রো ওভেন, এসি, ছোট গাড়ি এবং আরো কত কী ! আর co2 র পরিমান প্রতি বছর বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে ৭ PgC (7 PgC/yr)। এক শতকের এই বৃদ্ধিকে কমাতে সময় লাগবে ১০ হাজার বছর। তাপমাত্রা বেড়েছে ২ ডিগ্রী।
    সচেতন হতে হবে মানুষকে। এর ফলে যে সব দেশ গুলি সবচেয়ে বেশি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হবে তার মধ্যে অন্যতম আমাদেরই প্রতিবেশী বাংলা দেশ। ভারতের হাল ও খুব খারাপ। কিন্তু ভারতের এতে অবদান খুবই কম। যাদের অবদান বেশি তারদের ক্ষতি কম। কিন্তু তাও একটুও কি কিছুই করার নেই ভারতীয় তথা ক্রান্তীয় অঞ্চলের মানুষদের। প্রতিবাদ করার পাশাপাশি নিজেদের জীবন যাত্রাকেও কি একটুও পাল্টানো সম্ভব না ? আর সত্যি ই প্রতিবাদ করা দরকার। নয়তো এক্ষুনি দরজায় করা নাড়ার আওয়াজ আসবেই।
