Medical opinion is that the stomach will have to removed and reconstructed, along with other therapeutic measures (chemotherapy/ radiotherapy) to stop the spread of cancer to other organs. The cost of surgery and hospital stay alone will be to the order of 2.5 to 3.5 lakhs (provided no complications arise). The post operative treatment costs will be another 3-5 lakhs, depending upon situation, for the first one year.

    This amount is beyond the means of these people who are of the lower middle income strata, even after pooling all friends and family together. The monthly income of this family is less than 15 thousand INR per month, which is not enough to support a family of four and a disease like cancer. The operation is scheduled on 29th of March, 2013, at the TATA MEDICAL CENTRE, New Town, Kolkata.

Soon they had a mini crowd comprising teenagers ad their folk and even maids baying for my blood. "Chheley taakey baari giye teney niey aan," said the father. The father is a local real estate promoter with links to local councillors. They have threatened to beat me and my son up and one young fellow even said they will kill Abhimanyu. I need some help in dealing with this. If anyone knows any contacts with local law enforcers, please get in touch.

  • অনন্যা আমার আত্মীয়া। গতকালই তার মেয়েকে ভর্তি করেছে অ্যাপোলো হসপিটাল এ। গত বছরের ট্রীটমেন্টের (কলকাতার অ্যাপোলো তে কেমোথেরাপি) পর যখন ভাবা হচ্ছিল ক্যানসারের হাত থেকে মুক্তি পাওয়া গেল, তখনি বোর্ড এক্সাম দিয়ে ওঠার কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই আবার খবর পাওয়া গেল সেটা আবার রিল্যাপ্স করেছে।

    এবারের ট্রীটমেন্ট হবে কেমোথেরাপি দিয়ে তারপরে বোন ম্যারো ট্রান্সপ্লান্টেশন। ব্যয়বহুল এই চিকিৎসায় প্রায় ৫০ লক্ষ টাকার প্রয়োজন। যা অনন্যার সাধ্যের বাইরে। আমরা সবাই মিলে জানি কিছু কিছু চেষ্টা করলেই অনেক অনেক সুরাহা হয় ওদের।

    I have a friend by name Kiran Singh who was working at Ocwen Financial Solutions, Koramangala, Bangalore. Her dad, Kumar Singh, was admitted to Santhosh Hospital, Frazer Town, Bangalore a couple of years ago and reported both kidney / renal failure because of which he has to undergo dialysis 2/3 times a week for life. Due to his age and other complications involved kidney replacement is not suggested which might not be successful. It has been two years now and he is regularly undergoing dialysis which costs Rs.1230/- for every dialysis done. I have contacted the hospital and confirmed the regular treatment they are undergoing for last two years.

    Kiran is survived only by her dad and there are no direct relatives who can take care of her dad's medical expenses. She has sold everything she had to take care of her dad's treatment and now when it is critical she had to leave her job to attend her dad. She is left with nothing now to continue her dad's dialysis treatment and is already under debt. She couldn't take care of her rental, electricity and other basic needs as her dad was her priority and everything has piled up now to limits. Her dad is everything that she has and if not treated in few days (which is pending for a week now) she would be left with nothing.

    If you are aware of any NGOs or communities which take care of such medical expenses for those who cannot afford it, please let me / Kiran know about it. It would be of great help if you can save a life here. I am attaching her dad's case history.

    লড়াই অসম। তবু সাহস পাওয়া যাচ্ছে। অনেকের কাছ থেকেই আর্থিক সহায়তা পাওয়া গেছে, পাওয়ার আশ্বাসও আছে আরও কিছু – এও অনেক বড় পাওয়া।
