  • বন্যা সমস্ত শুভবুদ্ধি সম্পন্ন বিজ্ঞানমনস্ক বাঙালীদের কাছে একটি বার্তা পাঠিয়েছে। আমি সেটা এখানে আমার বক্তব্যের শেষে জুরে দিলাম।

    বন্যা একটি তহবিল গঠনে হাত দিয়েছে, যার মূল উদ্দেশ্য অভিজিত রায়ের অসমাপ্ত কাজকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়া-এবং আরো ব্যাপকতর
    করা। এই ধর্মান্ধতা এবং ঘৃণার বিরুদ্ধে বিজ্ঞান এবং যুক্তিবাদের প্রচার বাংলায় আরো প্রসারিত করতে-আগামী দিনে যেসব পরিকল্পনা
    নেওয়া হচ্ছে-তার মধ্যে আছে বাংলায় শিশুদের জন্য বিজ্ঞান সাহিত্য, বিজ্ঞান ভিডিও ডকুমেন্টারী, সমস্ত বইমেলাতে বিজ্ঞান লেখকদের বই
    ছাপানো। এছারাও বাংলাদেশের অনেক যুক্তিবাদি ব্লগার এখন গৃহছাড়া। অনেকেই প্রতিবেশী দেশে পরম দারিদ্রের মধ্যে বাস করছেন।
    তাদের সাহায্যপ্রদান ও আমাদের গুরুতর দ্বায়িত্ব। এই মুহুর্তে টার্গেট প্রায় ৫০,০০০ ডলারের প্রাথমিক তহবিল গঠন।

    Hi all,

    2015 has been a bloody year for Bangladesh. This is the year Islamist extremists attacked and murdered writers and publishers again and again: we lost the progressive writer Avijit Roy; the steadfast, dissenting voice of Washiqur Babu; the science activist, writer, and editor Ananta Bijoy Das; and Niloy Neel who was consistently vocal against superstitions of all kinds.

    The extremists also murdered a secular, humanist publisher and attacked another. Every few weeks new hit-lists are floated on the internet noting their new targets; progressive and secular individuals continue to receive threats via email, texts, and phone calls.

    Instead of justice, the murder victims have received blame. Islamic extremists have vindicated these barbaric murders by claiming that the victims had impugned Islam. Many Bangladeshis agree with this position, as does the self-proclaimed ‘secular’ government of the Awami League.

    The government’s silence, inaction and leniency after every single murder has encouraged the extremists. Operating through independent sleeper cells, they are carrying out surveillance on many humanist, secular activists. Many writers, publishers, and bloggers are already refugees within their own country; they have been forced to go into hiding. The government has utterly failed to provide any measure of security to these citizens. It should be noted that among the bloggers who were murdered and attacked, several had applied for the protection of the state.

    Since Avijit Roy’s murder in February 2015, many bloggers have contacted us seeking help. As the murders continue, the need to take immediate action becomes clearer. Steps we have already undertaken include:

    • Assisting writers, publishers, bloggers and activists within Bangladesh to find safe spaces
    • Ensuring their safety outside of Bangladesh
    • Providing financial assistance to those who have been forced to leave their jobs and go underground
    • Providing necessary legal support

    We are working in conjunction with global humanist and secular organizations that have stepped forward to provide support to Bangladeshi writers. With the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) serving as an umbrella organization, other institutions involved in these efforts include the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN), Center for Inquiry (CFI) US, CFI Canada, Dutch Humanist Association, British Humanist Association, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), PEN International, PEN Sweden, PEN USA, Frontline Defenders, Asia Forum, Freedom House. These organizations are providing many kinds of assistance including fundraising, awareness raising, relocation, and resettlement. We would also like to mention that there are many individuals within Bangladesh, who will remain nameless for security reasons, who have provided support at grave personal risk.

    Ananta Bijoy tried but failed to leave the country. Niloy Neel sought but did not receive protection from the police. Many activists are currently being surveilled by extremists. If we do nothing, they too shall suffer the fate of the others. Right now we have a single goal: Let Islamist cleavers claim no more lives.

    We have begun, through small but sure steps, to try and protect those who are in immediate danger. We will continue to do so. This is why we are writing to you.
