    Three figures from the former government of Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi are living safely in Britain despite being wanted in Tripoli for allegedly embezzling millions out of the country.

    The three men are on a list of former regime figures wanted by prosecutors in Tripoli for allegedly fleeing the country with assets stolen from the state in 2011.

    BuzzFeed News which carried out an investigation says the men have been given safe haven in the UK despite standing accused of laundering millions of pounds using British banks and property deals.

    The news website’s investigation found General Ahmed Mahmoud Azwai living in Surrey, one of Britain’s wealthiest counties. It’s claimed he laundered millions through property deals in the Home Counties using offshore companies.

    Azwai was reportedly in charge of maintaining Gaddafi’s Scud-B missile stockpile.

    He denies stealing from the state, and apparently did not respond to questions about his role in Gaddafi’s military.

    Brigadier Guima Elmaarfi, who now lives in a large house in southwest London, is suspected of escaping Libya with £14 million ($18.3 million) and is wanted for allegedly laundering stolen assets in the UK.

    Elmaarfi commanded a military brigade in the town of Tarhuna.

    Buzzfeed says he denies all allegations, and insists he was forced to leave his home country empty-handed.

    BuzzFeed says it has been banned from naming the third member of the Gaddafi regime found hiding out in Britain, after he hired law firm Mischon de Reya and top QCs Dinah Rose and Monica Carss-Frisk to obtain a gagging order from the High Court on Monday.

They are very concerned obviously about this new Russian activism, they are seeing submarines off their coasts, they are seeing airplanes they haven’t seen since the Cold War coming, bombers doing test runs. If Russia came over the border into Estonia or Latvia, Lithuania, places that Americans don’t think about all that often, would you come to their immediate military aid?

    TRUMP: I don’t want to tell you what I’d do because I don’t want Putin to know what I’d do. I have a serious chance of becoming president and I’m not like Obama, that every time they send some troops into Iraq or anyplace else, he has a news conference to announce it.

    SANGER: They are NATO members, and we are treaty-obligated ——

    TRUMP: We have many NATO members that aren’t paying their bills.

    SANGER: That’s true, but we are treaty-obligated under NATO, forget the bills part.

    TRUMP: You can’t forget the bills. They have an obligation to make payments. Many NATO nations are not making payments, are not making what they’re supposed to make. That’s a big thing. You can’t say forget that.

    SANGER: My point here is, Can the members of NATO, including the new members in the Baltics, count on the United States to come to their military aid if they were attacked by Russia? And count on us fulfilling our obligations ——

    TRUMP: Have they fulfilled their obligations to us? If they fulfill their obligations to us, the answer is yes.

    HABERMAN: And if not?

    TRUMP: Well, I’m not saying if not. I’m saying, right now there are many countries that have not fulfilled their obligations to us.

    In other words, Trump is saying that his unequivocal commitment to NATO hinges on whether particular NATO states — including the Baltics — have forked over enough cash.

    Trump clearly doesn’t think of NATO in terms of an ironclad guarantee to allied states. He thinks of it as transactional, akin to a real estate deal or (less charitably) a protection racket: The United States only protects its weaker allies if they pay up.

    An email leaked by WikiLeaks reveals that when Hillary Clinton was US secretary of state in 2011, billionaire George Soros instructed her on how to handle unrest in Albania, stressing it “needs urgent attention at senior levels of the US government.”

    “Dear Hillary,” begins the email dated January 24, 2011 from the founder of Open Society Foundations, Soros.

    “A serious situation has arisen in Albania which needs urgent attention at senior levels of the US government. You may know that an opposition demonstration in Tirana on Friday resulted in the deaths of three people and the destruction of property,” Soros says, according to the leaked email.

    “There are serious concerns about further unrest connected to a counter-demonstration to be organized by the governing party... and a follow-up event by the opposition two days later to memorialize the victims,” Soros says.

    “The prospect of tens of thousands of people entering the streets in an already inflamed political environment bodes ill for the return of public order and the country’s fragile democratic process,” he adds.

    “I believe two things need to be done urgently,” he adds.

    “1. Bring the full weight of the international community to bear on Prime Minister Berisha and opposition leader Edi Rama to forestall further public demonstrations and to tone down public pronouncements.

    2. Appoint a senior European official as a mediator.”

    Soros suggested three candidates: Carl Bildt, Martti Ahtisaari, and Miroslav Lajcak, saying all “have strong connections to the Balkans.”

    “The US and the EU must work in complete harmony over this, but given Albania’s European aspirations the EU must take the lead,” he stressed, adding that his foundation in Tirana was “monitoring the situation closely and can provide independent analysis of the crisis.”

    Several days after the email was sent to Clinton, the EU did send one of Soros’ suggested nominees, Miroslav Lajcak, to meet Albanian leaders in Tirana to try to mediate an end to the unrest, Reuters reported.
